How Snowmaking Engineering Revolutionized Dust Suppression
What happens when one of North America’s busiest ports turns to a snowmaking company to help solve their dust problem? Sometimes the most effective solutions come from outside the expected playbook.
That’s exactly how HKD Blue was born, not from a spec sheet or industrial catalog, but from a trusted partnership and a fresh perspective rooted in decades of water-atomization expertise.
A New Perspective on Dust Control: The Port of Quebec x HKD Blue
Sprawled across 520 acres and 14 square miles of harbor, the Port of Quebec is one of North America’s oldest and busiest shipping terminals. As the eastern terminus of the St. Lawrence Seaway, it serves as a critical transfer point for bulk materials like nickel, iron ore, and coal. This volume and the port’s sensitive location in the heart of Quebec City came with a major challenge: fugitive dust emissions.
Regulations required stevedoring companies to shut down operations if they couldn’t contain dust during bulk loading and discharge. The port needed a new perspective from a partner it could trust: HKD Snowmakers.
A snowmaking pioneer and trusted innovator, HKD Snowmakers brought 35 years of water-atomization science and technology as well as 35 years developing custom solutions under the harsh, ever-changing conditions of mountains around the world.
Instead of offering an off-the-shelf solution, we drew on our expertise and engineered something entirely new. By applying precision atomization technology to dust control, we created a misting system capable of efficiently capturing airborne dust without the oversaturation, downtime, or operational challenges of traditional solutions.
Dust Suppression Welcomes A New Player–and a New Standard
The challenge at the Port of Quebec gave us the opportunity to reimagine what snowmaking expertise could do. Not only did it mark the beginning of HKD Blue, it also created a new standard for industrial dust suppression.
From high-performance misting cannons to self-contained mobile units, HKD Blue systems are engineered to solve unique emissions challenges at ports, scrapyards, waste and recycling facilities, quarries, mines, and demolition sites across North America.
As part of our DNA, our dust suppression technology is engineered for the most extreme climates, from frigid mountain peaks to scorching desert quarries. While we are proud to engineer the most powerful dust control cannons and advanced dust suppression systems, we don’t just sell equipment–we partner with you to create efficient, economical, and effective solutions for each site’s unique challenges.
When standard solutions don’t work, our engineering team treats your challenges as their own to deliver results that matter to your operation. We’re not satisfied until the problem’s solved.
